Job Overview
Hangar 13 is seeking a highly experienced Lead Technical Artist – Tools and Pipeline to lead the development and maintenance of scalable content pipelines and production tools for AAA game projects.
This role acts as a bridge between artists, engineers, and designers to ensure efficient asset production, seamless workflow integration, and high-performance game content. The successful candidate will guide a team of technical artists while collaborating with both internal teams and external co-development partners.
The position requires onsite collaboration at one of the studios at least three days per week.
Key Responsibilities
- Architect and maintain scalable pipelines for multiple content disciplines including environments, characters, animation, vehicles, materials, VFX, and cinematics.
- Design and implement custom tools, scripts, and workflows to streamline asset production and integration.
- Collaborate with engineering teams to extend Unreal Engine 5 editor functionality and improve asset processing workflows.
- Ensure pipelines are user-friendly, scalable, and optimized for large production environments.
- Establish best practices for asset versioning, validation systems, and automated build processes.
- Lead and mentor a team of technical artists, providing feedback, setting standards, and supporting professional development.
- Work closely with production teams to manage priorities, schedules, and development resources.
- Collaborate with outsourcing and co-development partners to ensure their assets integrate smoothly into the production pipeline.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- Extensive experience in the games industry with at least two shipped AAA titles.
- Proven experience as a Senior or Lead Technical Artist with a focus on tools and pipeline development.
- Expert knowledge of Unreal Engine 5, including editor tools, asset pipelines, and Blueprint workflows.
- Strong scripting or programming skills using languages such as Python, C++, C#, or similar.
- Experience with version control systems such as Perforce.
- Familiarity with build and automation tools including Jenkins, Unreal Build Tools, and CI/CD pipelines.
- Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving abilities.
Education
A degree in Computer Graphics, Game Development, Computer Science, or a related technical discipline is preferred. Equivalent professional experience within the game development industry will also be considered.
