About the Role
Insomniac Games is seeking an experienced Lead VFX Artist to guide and develop a high-performing visual effects team. This leadership role blends hands-on creation with team management, ensuring the delivery of high-quality, performant VFX that align with the artistic vision and technical requirements of modern game development.
Job Overview
The Lead VFX Artist will oversee the creation, implementation, and optimization of visual effects across gameplay, cinematics, characters, and environments. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams, define pipelines, and ensure consistent quality while mentoring artists and driving innovation in production workflows.
Key Responsibilities
- Balance hands-on VFX asset creation with leadership and management of the VFX team.
- Partner with the Principal VFX Artist to develop and refine content pipelines and workflows.
- Oversee external VFX vendors and ensure quality, style, and technical standards are met.
- Collaborate with production teams to scope work, estimate timelines, and track progress.
- Work closely with Art Directors to establish and maintain visual quality and consistency.
- Review and provide feedback on VFX assets to ensure performance and artistic alignment.
- Coordinate with cross-disciplinary teams to support gameplay, environments, and cinematics.
- Ensure timely delivery and smooth integration of VFX assets into the game engine.
- Collaborate with tools and engine teams to improve VFX pipelines and fidelity.
- Implement best practices, optimizations, and innovative production techniques.
- Lead, mentor, and develop VFX artists through goal-setting and performance reviews.

Required Qualifications
- Advanced expertise in Houdini and Maya, including animation, simulations, shaders, and rendering.
- Strong skills in 3D modeling, procedural modeling, and UV mapping.
- Experience with modern game engines such as Unreal Engine, Unity, or proprietary tools.
- Proficiency in real-time VFX systems such as Unreal Niagara or PopcornFX.
- Advanced understanding of node-based shader networks.
- Experience with scripting and programming (e.g., Python, MEL, Houdini VEX, HLSL).
- Proficiency in Photoshop and procedural texture tools like Substance Designer.
- Strong knowledge of VFX pipelines, optimization, and real-time performance considerations.
- Experience with leadership, mentoring, and team management.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills.
Education
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Graphics, Animation, Game Development, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
