Job Overview
Companion Group is seeking a Technical Artist specializing in materials to help define the visual identity of a stylised game. This role bridges art and engineering, focusing on creating high-quality, performant materials and improving material pipelines within Unreal Engine.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, prototype, and implement stylised materials and shaders in Unreal Engine.
- Collaborate with concept artists and 3D teams to translate visual designs into real-time assets.
- Optimize material performance across platforms, including console constraints.
- Develop scalable and modular material systems for efficient workflows.
- Troubleshoot and resolve material and shader-related issues.
- Document workflows and educate teams on best practices and performance optimization.
- Contribute to visual development and research to enhance project aesthetics.
- Collaborate with VFX, lighting, and technical art teams for cohesive visuals.
Qualifications
- 3+ years of experience in the game industry.
- Strong expertise in Unreal Engine material editor and shader pipeline.
- Solid understanding of PBR workflows, stylised rendering, and real-time lighting.
- Experience with HLSL or node-based shader development.
- Familiarity with performance debugging tools like RenderDoc or Unreal Insights.
- Understanding of GPU performance and optimization techniques.
- Experience with DCC tools such as Maya, Blender, Houdini, or Substance Painter.
- Strong problem-solving and collaboration skills.
- Ability to work independently in a remote environment.
Preferred Skills:
- Experience with Substance Designer, Quixel, or MaterialX.
- Knowledge of procedural material workflows and automation.
- Experience working with stylised or hand-painted art styles.
- Familiarity with console development (Switch, PlayStation, Xbox).
- Basic scripting or blueprinting knowledge in Unreal Engine.
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Game Art, Computer Graphics, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
