Position Overview
The Junior Designer will support the 1-color team in developing creative and engaging book designs for young adult, middle grade, non-fiction, and graphic novel titles. This role blends strong typographic design, production expertise, and collaborative communication within a fast-paced publishing environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and set up mechanicals and effects plates for jackets, covers, and interiors.
- Create engaging cover and interior designs using composition, typography, illustration, and photography.
- Typeset corrections throughout the routing process.
- Route materials according to department guidelines and procedures.
- Research and recommend illustrators, photographers, and stock imagery.
- Develop polished sketch comps to articulate design concepts.
- Collaborate with editorial and internal departments.
- Communicate with illustrators and deliver project notes.
- Maintain production schedules and respond to interdepartmental queries.
Required Skills
- Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, Google Suite, and Mac platform.
- Strong understanding of color theory and design fundamentals.
- Exceptional typography skills demonstrated in portfolio.
- Knowledge of and interest in the book publishing industry.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Collaborative mindset and eagerness to learn.
- A passion for reading and storytelling.
Education & Experience
- 1–3 years of bookmaking or related design experience.
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Graphic Design or related field, or equivalent professional experience.
