About Mentor A Promise

Mentor A Promise (MAP) is a New York City–based nonprofit serving children and youth ages 5–18 experiencing housing instability. Through mentorship, literacy programs, social-emotional learning (SEL), and creative expression, MAP empowers young people to see themselves reflected in stories of dignity, imagination, and possibility.

PromiseStories, MAP’s creative media initiative, produces mission-driven storytelling across film, animation, publishing, podcasting, and digital media to amplify youth voices and lived experiences.

Role Overview

MAP is seeking a passionate Stop Motion Animation Artist (Volunteer) to help bring youth-centered stories to life through handcrafted animation. This role supports short films, educational content, children’s storytelling, and campaign pieces that align with MAP’s dignity-centered mission.

This is a recurring volunteer opportunity requiring approximately 5–10 hours per week, with a preferred six-month commitment. Volunteers must be based in the United States.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop stop motion animation concepts aligned with MAP’s mission and values
  • Create short animated pieces for educational and storytelling initiatives
  • Collaborate with writers, illustrators, and content teams
  • Assist in storyboard development and visual planning
  • Ensure animations are accessible, age-appropriate, and culturally responsive
  • Participate in creative brainstorming sessions
  • Maintain professional communication using Google Workspace tools

Qualifications

  • Experience with stop motion techniques (claymation, paper cut-out, object animation, etc.)
  • Understanding of animation tools and production workflows
  • Strong visual storytelling abilities
  • Ability to collaborate effectively across creative teams
  • Alignment with MAP’s youth empowerment mission

Preferred Skills

  • Portfolio demonstrating stop motion animation work
  • Experience creating children’s or educational content
  • Familiarity with basic video editing software
  • Interest in social impact and equity-centered storytelling
