Job Overview
The Lead 3D Environment Artist will drive the artistic vision and execution of large-scale environments while remaining hands-on in building high-quality game worlds. This role collaborates closely with Art Direction, Design, and Engineering teams to ensure visually cohesive, performant environments. The position also helps establish workflows, production pipelines, and technical foundations that allow the team to efficiently build expansive game environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the artistic vision and quality standards for environment art while contributing directly to environment creation.
- Design and build large-scale environments, cinematic vistas, and immersive spaces with strong composition and atmosphere.
- Develop and maintain landscape and terrain workflows, including advanced material setups and landscape materials.
- Utilize procedural content creation techniques to accelerate world building while maintaining artistic consistency.
- Apply real-time lighting fundamentals and collaborate with lighting and technical artists when needed.
- Partner with technical art and engineering teams to establish optimized environment and lighting pipelines.
- Define project schedules, milestones, and resource requirements with the production team.
- Monitor production progress, identify risks, and implement proactive solutions to maintain smooth development.
- Document and improve art production workflows and best practices.
- Provide mentorship, feedback, and support to environment artists while helping grow the team.
Required Qualifications
- 5+ years of professional experience in environment art within the game industry.
- Previous experience in a senior or lead environment artist role.
- Experience shipping games or live products featuring large-scale environments or open worlds.
- Strong knowledge of real-time environment pipelines in modern game engines.
- Experience with terrain systems, large-world streaming, and real-time lighting.
- Expertise in landscape and terrain workflows, including complex landscape materials.
- Experience using procedural world-building or rule-based generation tools in production.
- Strong understanding of environment composition, visual storytelling, and cinematic environment creation.
- Experience mentoring artists and maintaining a high quality bar across teams.
- Availability to work during core studio hours (10am – 4pm CST).
Education
A degree in Game Art, Digital Art, Computer Graphics, or a related field is preferred. Equivalent professional experience and a strong portfolio demonstrating environment art expertise may also be considered.
