About Epoch Games

Epoch Games is a volunteer-based, fully remote global game development team currently building The Lays of Althas: Sundered Order (LoA:SO), an indie open-world fantasy RPG using Unreal Engine 4 (UE4). The team was originally formed by modders behind the Middle Earth Roleplaying Project (MERP) mod for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

Communication and collaboration are handled online via Slack and Trello, allowing team members to work remotely from anywhere.

Job Overview

Epoch Games is looking for a talented 3D Creature Artist to create realistic and fantastical creatures for The Lays of Althas: Sundered Order. In this volunteer internship role, you will sculpt, texture, and design high-quality creature models with realistic forms and heraldic or fantasy-inspired details.

Your work will help populate the game world alongside realistic human characters and immersive environments.

Responsibilities

  • Create realistic and fantastical creature meshes and textures.
  • Sculpt creature fur using hair cards and alpha planes.
  • Develop low-poly, game-ready creature assets for Unreal Engine 4.
  • Create high-quality texture maps including diffuse, normal, and displacement maps.
  • Work accurately from concept art and design references.
  • Collaborate with team members and provide constructive feedback.
  • Attend meetings and communicate regularly through Slack.
  • Follow team policies and production standards.
  • Mentor junior artists when needed.

Qualifications

  • Experience creating realistic creature meshes and textures.
  • Experience creating fur sculpts using hair cards and alpha planes.
  • Knowledge of Physically Based Rendering (PBR) workflows.
  • Experience creating low-poly and game-ready assets.
  • Strong texturing skills including diffuse, normal, and displacement maps.
  • Ability to work from concept art and predefined designs.
  • Ability to provide and receive constructive criticism.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills.
  • Passion for modeling and AAA-quality game development.
  • Fluency in English.

Preferred Skills:

  • Rigging and skinning experience with 3D creatures.

Education

Formal education is not required. A strong portfolio and relevant creature modeling experience are highly valued.
