About the Role

thatgamecompany, the award-winning studio behind Journey, flOw, Flower, and Sky: Children of the Light, is seeking a talented 3D Environment Artist to help craft immersive and emotionally rich game worlds. This role works closely with the Art and Design teams to build landscapes, environments, and narrative-driven spaces for Sky.

Job Overview

As a 3D Environment Artist, you will collaborate with Creative Directors, Art Leads, Vis Dev Artists, and fellow Environment Artists to design and build stylized game environments. The ideal candidate understands environmental storytelling and can create visually compelling spaces that support gameplay and narrative experiences.

Responsibilities

  • Create landscapes using the studio’s proprietary terrain system.
  • Develop models and dress environments to support visual storytelling.
  • Collaborate with project leads, concept artists, and game designers.
  • Brainstorm ideas and build rapid prototypes during concept development.
  • Support the art team in creating high-quality 3D assets.
  • Review, troubleshoot, and fix bugs related to environment assets.
  • Contribute to creating immersive and emotionally engaging game worlds.

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of experience in the game industry.
  • Strong proficiency in Autodesk Maya.
  • Excellent artistic sensibility with strong understanding of design, color, lighting, and composition.
  • Strong attention to detail and environmental storytelling skills.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration abilities.
  • Self-motivated, adaptable, and eager to learn new tools and workflows.
  • Ability to take and implement constructive feedback effectively.
