About the Role
Unknown Worlds is looking for an experienced Senior VFX Artist to help build the immersive underwater world of Subnautica 2. This role focuses on creating real-time visual effects that enhance gameplay, storytelling, and emotional depth across environments, creatures, tools, vehicles, and UI.
You will collaborate across design, engineering, and art teams to deliver high-quality, performant effects that clearly communicate gameplay while maintaining artistic excellence.
Job Overview
- Work on diverse VFX features including environments, gameplay systems, UI, and cinematics
- Create visually compelling real-time effects aligned with gameplay and artistic direction
- Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams in a fully remote environment
- Ensure performance optimization across multiple platforms
- Contribute to pipeline improvements and team workflows
Key Responsibilities
- Create, implement, and iterate on real-time visual effects
- Own VFX for key gameplay features and systems
- Collaborate with design, engineering, and art teams
- Optimize effects to meet performance budgets
- Improve workflows, tools, and documentation
- Provide feedback and mentorship to other VFX artists
- Iterate based on playtests and player feedback
Qualifications
- 5+ years of experience as a VFX Artist in the gaming industry
- At least one shipped game title
- Strong experience with Unreal Engine 5, Niagara, and Blueprints
- Proficiency in shader/material creation and particle systems
- Solid understanding of real-time rendering and performance optimization
- Experience with tools like Blender, Photoshop, Substance Designer, After Effects, and Houdini
- Strong portfolio showcasing real-time VFX work
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Art, Animation, Game Design, or related field (or equivalent experience)
