Job Overview

Companion Group is hiring a VFX Artist to create high-quality real-time visual effects for multiplayer games. In this role, you will work closely with cross-functional teams to design and implement immersive VFX that enhance gameplay, storytelling, and player experience.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and implement real-time VFX for characters, environments, and gameplay interactions.
  • Create effects using particle systems, shaders, and physics-based simulations.
  • Develop and optimize VFX assets for performance across platforms.
  • Collaborate with art, animation, and design teams to ensure visual consistency.
  • Create both stylized and realistic effects including fire, smoke, explosions, and weather systems.
  • Utilize Unreal Engine Niagara or similar tools to develop advanced visual effects.
  • Research and prototype new techniques to push real-time VFX boundaries.
  • Maintain documentation of workflows, pipelines, and best practices.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience as a VFX Artist in game development.
  • Proficiency with Unreal Engine Niagara or other real-time VFX tools (Unity VFX Graph, PopcornFX).
  • Strong understanding of particle systems, shaders, lighting, and materials.
  • Experience with Houdini, Blender, or Maya for simulation workflows.
  • Solid knowledge of physics, motion, and timing in VFX.
  • Familiarity with PBR workflows and real-time optimization techniques.
  • Basic knowledge of shader programming (HLSL/GLSL) or scripting is a plus.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work in fast-paced environments.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience working on AAA or high-quality indie games.
  • Background in animation or technical art.
  • Understanding of rigid body dynamics, fluid simulations, and destruction workflows.
  • Knowledge of Nintendo Switch optimization techniques.
  • Passion for video games and awareness of industry trends.

Education

  • Degree in Visual Effects, Game Art, Animation, or related field (or equivalent experience).
