About the Role

Flying Bark Productions is seeking an experienced CG FX Artist to join its Alexandria studio in Sydney. This role focuses on creating high-quality visual effects for animated feature films and episodic productions. The ideal candidate will combine strong technical expertise with a refined artistic eye to produce stylized and cinematic FX aligned with each project’s visual direction.

You will work on exciting productions including Avatar: The Last Airbender feature film, Netflix’s Ghostbusters animated series, Stranger Things animated series, and Tales From Outer Suburbia by Shaun Tan.

Job Overview

  • Create and simulate a variety of CG effects including fire, smoke, water, particles, fluids, and destruction.
  • Develop FX setups and propagate simulations across multiple shots.
  • Ensure all FX assets align with internal workflows and the project’s artistic vision.
  • Generate compatible caches for export into multiple software pipelines.
  • Render effects in show-compatible image format elements.
  • Collaborate with supervisors and other departments to maintain visual consistency.

Responsibilities

  • Produce high-quality 3D effects for animated films and episodic projects.
  • Execute look development for stylized visual effects.
  • Assist in setting up and maintaining reusable effects preset libraries.
  • Export caches and integrate effects into production pipelines.
  • Provide mentorship, training, and support to junior artists when required.
  • Work closely with the CG FX Supervisor and CG Supervisor to achieve creative goals.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 5+ years of production experience in 3D animated films or animated episodic series.
  • Strong portfolio or demo reel focused on FX for CG animation (not VFX).
  • Experience with mature, graphic stylization similar to Spider-Verse, Entergalactic, Arcane, and The Witness.
  • Excellent knowledge of Houdini, Katana, and Arnold.
  • Knowledge of Maya and Nuke is advantageous.
  • Strong understanding of particles, fluids, destruction, and simulation workflows.
