About Epoch Games

Epoch Games is a volunteer-based, fully remote global game development team currently developing The Lays of Althas: Sundered Order (LoA:SO), an indie open-world fantasy RPG using Unreal Engine 4 (UE4). The team was founded by modders behind the Middle Earth Roleplaying Project (MERP) for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

Communication and collaboration are primarily handled online via Slack and Trello.

Job Overview

Epoch Games is seeking a talented 3D Character Artist to create realistic character assets for The Lays of Althas: Sundered Order. In this volunteer internship role, you will specialize in creating high-quality 3D human bodies, faces, hair, clothing, armor meshes, and textures for in-game use.

The team currently uses Reallusion Character Creator 3 (CC3) for sculpting human characters, and this role will focus heavily on creating custom assets such as hair, armor, and clothing that go beyond existing tools.

Responsibilities

  • Create realistic human character meshes and textures.
  • Design and build realistic clothing and armor meshes and textures.
  • Create realistic hair sculpts using hair cards and alpha planes.
  • Develop game-ready low-poly assets optimized for Unreal Engine 4.
  • Apply PBR workflows and create detailed texture maps.
  • Work accurately from pre-defined concept art and designs.
  • Collaborate with team members and provide constructive feedback.
  • Attend meetings and communicate regularly through Slack.
  • Mentor junior artists when needed.
  • Follow team policies and maintain quality standards.

Qualifications

  • Experience creating realistic human character meshes and textures.
  • Experience creating realistic clothing and armor meshes and textures.
  • Ability to sculpt realistic hair using hair cards and alpha planes.
  • Experience with Physically Based Rendering (PBR) workflows.
  • Experience creating low-poly and game-ready assets.
  • Strong texturing skills including diffuse, normal, and displacement maps.
  • Ability to work from concept art and predefined designs.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills.
  • Passion for 3D modeling and AAA-quality game development.
  • Fluency in English.

Education

Formal education is not required. A strong portfolio and relevant experience in character modeling are highly valued.
