About Epoch Games

Epoch Games is a volunteer-based, fully remote global game development team currently building The Lays of Althas: Sundered Order (LoA:SO), an indie open-world fantasy RPG for PC using Unreal Engine 4 (UE4). The team was originally formed by modders behind the Middle Earth Roleplaying Project (MERP) mod for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

The company operates entirely online, with collaboration and communication managed through Slack and other digital tools.

Job Overview

Epoch Games is seeking a skilled and experienced Lead 3D Game Artist to oversee and review the work of a team of 3D artists. In this volunteer internship role, you will help create and critique high-quality textured 3D assets for The Lays of Althas: Sundered Order while ensuring quality and consistency across the art pipeline.

This is an ideal role for someone passionate about game development who can contribute spare-time hours in a leadership capacity.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and mentor a team of 3D Game Artists.
  • Review and provide constructive feedback on 3D models and textures.
  • Create high-quality, game-ready 3D assets for the project.
  • Ensure assets meet technical and artistic standards.
  • Collaborate with team members to maintain a smooth production pipeline.
  • Attend meetings and communicate regularly via Slack.
  • Follow team policies and orientation guidelines.
  • Assist in maintaining consistency in style and asset quality.

Qualifications

  • Strong communication and team collaboration skills.
  • Experience managing or mentoring other 3D Game Artists.
  • Ability to provide constructive criticism and feedback on 3D models and textures.
  • Knowledge of Physically Based Rendering (PBR) workflows.
  • Experience creating low-poly, game-ready assets.
  • Strong texturing knowledge including diffuse, normal, and displacement maps.
  • Passion for game development.
  • Fluency in English.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience with Unreal Engine.
  • Experience with Autodesk 3DS Max, Maya, Blender, ZBrush, or Mudbox.
  • Experience with Photoshop or GIMP.

Education

Formal education is not required. Relevant industry experience, leadership ability, and a strong portfolio are highly valued.
