The successful candidate will contribute to high-fidelity character development and create technical solutions that improve both the artistic workflow and in-game character performance.
Job Overview
The Technical Artist will develop artist-facing rigging and animation tools while improving character and facial animation pipelines. The position involves working with Python, Maya, 3ds Max, and MotionBuilder alongside central technology teams and game artists.
This is a hybrid role requiring three days per week in one of the offices listed in the original posting, including Birmingham, Southam, Leamington Spa, Guildford, or Manchester.
Key Responsibilities
- Rigging Tools: Develop artist-facing rigging and animation tools using Python with Maya, 3ds Max, and MotionBuilder.
- Facial Animation: Enhance facial animation pipelines to deliver more anatomical, expressive, and high-fidelity character deformation.
- Procedural Rigging: Extend EA SPORTS procedural rigging systems to support complex character rigs and collaborate with technology and game development teams.
- Technical Standards: Establish technical standards and workflows for character rigging, animation, and asset development.
- Character Performance: Diagnose skeletal mesh issues and optimize character assets to meet project performance requirements and technical budgets.
Qualifications
- 3+ years of experience as a Technical Artist or Technical Animator in game development.
- Experience contributing to at least one shipped AAA game title.
- Professional experience with Python and digital content creation software such as Maya or 3ds Max.
- Experience creating artist-facing interfaces with Qt, PySide, or comparable frameworks.
- Strong knowledge of character kinematics, anatomy, skeletal structures, rigging, and deformation.
Education
- Degree or equivalent professional training in Game Development, Computer Graphics, Animation, Technical Art, or a related discipline.
- Relevant professional experience in technical art, character rigging, or animation pipelines may be considered alongside formal education.
