Job Overview

The Character Designer will explore multiple visual directions for characters, including poses, expressions, costumes, and turnarounds while supporting the overall artistic vision of productions. The role requires both creative problem-solving and strong collaboration across departments.

Candidates should demonstrate versatility in artistic styles, strong anatomy knowledge, and the ability to create production-ready character designs for animation workflows.

Key Responsibilities

  • Character Development: Design and refine character appearances, personalities, and visual styles throughout production.
  • Creative Exploration: Produce multiple design iterations including expressions, poses, and turnaround sheets.
  • Cross-Team Collaboration: Work closely with directors, art directors, and downstream departments such as modeling and texturing.
  • Visual Problem Solving: Resolve design challenges while maintaining artistic consistency and production goals.
  • Research & Reference: Conduct visual research related to anatomy, costumes, and stylistic inspiration.
  • Production Support: Deliver polished final designs and maintain efficient communication with the broader animation team.

Qualifications

  • Previous experience in animated feature films, television, or game production preferred.
  • Strong draftsmanship and character illustration skills.
  • Excellent understanding of anatomy, volumetric drawing, and expressive posing.
  • Ability to communicate creative ideas effectively in collaborative environments.
  • Advanced proficiency in Photoshop.
  • Strong understanding of costume design and visual storytelling principles.

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Animation, Illustration, Fine Arts, or a related field preferred.
  • Equivalent professional experience and portfolio quality may substitute formal education.
  • Strong portfolio demonstrating character design and stylistic versatility is required.
