Thatgamecompany is seeking a skilled Gameplay Engineer to join its live team and help build engaging social gameplay experiences. This remote opportunity offers the chance to contribute to one of the industry’s most innovative multiplayer games while collaborating with a talented cross-functional team.

Job Overview

The Gameplay Engineer will design, develop, and refine gameplay systems that support seasonal content, social experiences, and player engagement features. Working closely with designers and backend engineers, you will create networked gameplay mechanics for a large-scale live service environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop Gameplay Features: Design, implement, debug, and optimize networked gameplay systems and interactive features.
  • Create Live Content: Build gameplay mechanics for seasonal events, quests, and daily activities that improve player retention.
  • Enhance Social Experiences: Develop systems that support multiplayer interactions and social gameplay.
  • Collaborate Across Teams: Work closely with designers and backend engineers on both real-time and asynchronous game features.
  • Iterate and Improve: Rapidly refine gameplay systems based on testing results, player feedback, and team input.
  • Provide Technical Expertise: Contribute ideas and technical insights that help shape game design and implementation.

Qualifications

  • 3–5+ years of professional programming experience in the game industry.
  • Strong proficiency in C, C++, or C# and object-oriented programming principles.
  • Excellent understanding of 3D vector mathematics and gameplay systems development.
  • Experience using scripting languages and data formats such as Lua and JSON.
  • Hands-on experience with MMO or multiplayer game development.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively in an iterative environment.

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Game Development, or a related field is preferred.
  • Equivalent professional experience in game programming will also be considered.
  • Additional training in multiplayer systems, networking, or gameplay engineering is advantageous.
