Senior Technical Designer – Gameplay Implementation at Eleventh Hour Games

Job Overview

Eleventh Hour Games is seeking a Senior Technical Designer – Gameplay Implementation to help design, debug, implement, and refine gameplay systems for Last Epoch. This role is ideal for technically skilled game designers with strong ARPG experience, deep systems knowledge, and hands-on expertise working with gameplay implementation tools inside modern game engines such as Unity or Unreal Engine.

Key Responsibilities

  • Investigate, diagnose, and resolve issues across gameplay systems including combat, progression, abilities, and content setup.
  • Improve the reliability, scalability, and maintainability of interconnected gameplay systems.
  • Support bug fixing, balancing, debugging, and iteration of existing gameplay content.
  • Design and implement gameplay systems that enhance player engagement and long-term retention.
  • Collaborate closely with engineering and design teams to bridge gameplay vision with technical implementation.
  • Prototype gameplay mechanics directly within the game engine using scripting or visual scripting tools.
  • Create technical documentation including gameplay specs, logic flows, implementation notes, and bug reports.
  • Identify technical constraints and propose practical, high-quality solutions.
  • Work with production teams to scope tasks, manage timelines, and maintain quality standards.
  • Use live data, player feedback, and testing insights to improve gameplay systems over time.
  • Contribute to raising the quality bar through collaboration, technical problem-solving, and ownership.

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience in technical design, systems design, game design, or related roles on shipped games.
  • Strong understanding of action RPG systems including progression, combat, itemization, and abilities.
  • Hands-on experience debugging, tuning, and improving gameplay systems.
  • Experience implementing gameplay features using scripting, visual scripting, or similar tools.
  • Strong understanding of gameplay balance, player-facing mechanics, and progression systems.
  • Ability to communicate effectively through technical documentation and cross-functional collaboration.
  • Experience collaborating with engineers to ship gameplay systems and features.
  • Excellent debugging, iteration, and problem-solving skills.
  • Familiarity with Unity, Unreal Engine, or similar game development technologies.
  • Ability to independently own systems and features from concept to completion.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Direct experience developing Action RPG games.
  • Experience supporting live-service games and long-term gameplay iteration.
  • Familiarity with gameplay metrics, balance tuning, and data-driven design decisions.
  • Experience improving internal workflows and iteration pipelines.
  • Strong understanding of ARPG itemization and combat systems.
  • Experience stabilizing and improving existing systems before implementing new features.
