About the Role

Eleventh Hour Games, the studio behind the acclaimed action RPG Last Epoch, is looking for a Senior Technical Game Designer to help shape engaging gameplay experiences. This role blends game design expertise with technical implementation to create scalable, polished, and player-focused systems in a fully remote environment.

Job Overview

The Senior Technical Game Designer will work closely with design, engineering, UI, and production teams to create, implement, and refine gameplay systems. The position requires a strong understanding of ARPG mechanics, technical problem-solving, and hands-on implementation using modern game development tools and engines.

Key Responsibilities

  • Gameplay Systems Design: Design, implement, and fine-tune gameplay systems that support combat, progression, and long-term player engagement.
  • Technical Implementation: Prototype and develop gameplay features directly within game engines using scripting and technical tools.
  • Cross-Team Collaboration: Partner with engineers, designers, UI specialists, and production teams to align technical implementation with design goals.
  • Documentation: Create and maintain technical design documents, implementation notes, and feature specifications for development teams.
  • System Optimization: Identify technical challenges, troubleshoot issues, and continuously improve gameplay systems through iteration and tuning.
  • Risk Assessment: Collaborate with production teams to scope features and identify potential quality, timeline, or maintainability risks.
  • Quality Improvement: Analyze player feedback, gameplay metrics, and bug reports to enhance player experience and system quality.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience in technical design, systems design, game design, or a related discipline.
  • Strong understanding of top-down action RPG systems, progression, combat, and itemization mechanics.
  • Experience implementing gameplay systems using scripting, visual scripting, or equivalent tools.
  • Proficiency with game engines such as Unity, Unreal Engine, or similar platforms.
  • Strong debugging, problem-solving, and system iteration skills.
  • Excellent communication skills and experience collaborating with cross-functional teams.

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Game Design, Computer Science, Interactive Media, or a related field is preferred.
  • Equivalent professional experience in technical game design will also be considered.
  • Additional training in gameplay systems, scripting, or interactive design is advantageous.
