Eleventh Hour Games, the studio behind the successful action RPG Last Epoch, is seeking an experienced Lead Level Designer to help shape immersive gameplay experiences. This position offers an opportunity to guide level design direction while collaborating with a talented global team in a fully remote environment.

Job Overview

The Lead Level Designer will oversee the creation of engaging environments, encounters, and player experiences that support gameplay, narrative, and artistic objectives. This role combines creative leadership with hands-on development, mentoring designers while ensuring high-quality level production.

Key Responsibilities

  • Team Leadership: Lead, mentor, and support a team of level designers, fostering collaboration and professional growth.
  • Creative Direction: Drive the vision and execution of levels to align with gameplay, narrative, and artistic goals.
  • Cross-Disciplinary Collaboration: Work closely with artists, narrative designers, engineers, and systems designers to deliver cohesive player experiences.
  • Level Review: Evaluate level layouts, encounter balance, and worldbuilding consistency while providing constructive feedback.
  • Hands-on Development: Contribute directly to level blockouts, encounter scripting, and gameplay prototyping.
  • Workflow Improvement: Establish and refine pipelines, best practices, and production workflows for efficient level development.
  • Production Planning: Collaborate with production teams to scope, schedule, and track level design deliverables.
  • Player Experience Advocacy: Ensure levels are engaging, rewarding, accessible, and aligned with the game’s vision.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of professional level design experience within the game industry.
  • At least 2 years of experience in a lead or senior design capacity.
  • Experience shipping at least one game title in a senior or leadership role.
  • Strong understanding of encounter design, pacing, and player progression systems.
  • Hands-on experience using level design tools within Unity or Unreal Engine.
  • Excellent collaboration, communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Game Design, Computer Science, Interactive Media, or a related field is preferred.
  • Equivalent professional experience in level design will also be considered.
  • Additional training in game development, level scripting, or interactive storytelling is advantageous.
