Job Overview

The Story Artist will create storyboard panels that define action, humor, emotional beats, camera placement, and continuity throughout animated feature productions. The role requires strong storytelling instincts, draftsmanship, and the ability to pitch and revise ideas effectively within a collaborative production environment.

Candidates should possess strong visual communication skills, cinematic understanding, and experience working across multiple storytelling styles including action, comedy, and drama.

Key Responsibilities

  • Storyboard Creation: Develop storyboard sequences from scripts and creative direction using rough and polished panels.
  • Visual Storytelling: Plan camera angles, acting, staging, pacing, and action sequences to support narrative clarity.
  • Creative Pitching: Present storyboard sequences to directors, story teams, and studio leadership.
  • Sequence Revision: Revise and refine storyboard panels based on production feedback and evolving story needs.
  • Team Leadership: Support story team collaboration and provide feedback throughout production workflows.
  • Narrative Development: Help identify and solve story structure, entertainment, and pacing challenges creatively.

Qualifications

  • Strong draftsmanship, composition, and visual storytelling skills.
  • Ability to work across multiple genres and visual styles from realistic to stylized animation.
  • Excellent character acting, staging, and cinematography understanding.
  • Strong communication and storytelling presentation abilities.
  • Proficiency with Toon Boom Storyboard Pro, Photoshop, and Cintiq workflows.
  • Ability to work efficiently in fast-paced production environments while adapting to creative feedback.

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Animation, Illustration, Fine Arts, Film, or a related field preferred.
  • Equivalent professional production experience may substitute formal education.
  • Strong storyboard portfolio or reel demonstrating storytelling and cinematic skills is required.
