About the Role

Cloud Chamber is seeking a Principal Environment Concept Artist to help define the visual identity of the next BioShock experience. This role focuses on creating high-fidelity environmental concepts that support gameplay systems, narrative storytelling, and world-building within a visually immersive AAA game production.

The successful candidate will collaborate closely with Design, Narrative, Art, and Engineering teams to establish the visual benchmark and artistic direction for complex gameplay spaces and environments.

Job Overview

The Principal Concept Artist will lead the creation of detailed environment concepts, gameplay visualizations, and architectural world-building references that guide production teams throughout development. This role requires both creative leadership and technical awareness to ensure concept art integrates effectively into 3D production pipelines.

Working within Cloud Chamber’s collaborative AAA environment, the artist will mentor team members, support innovation in visual development, and contribute to the atmospheric storytelling that defines the BioShock franchise.

Key Responsibilities

  • Visual Benchmarking: Establish and maintain the visual quality standards and artistic direction for environmental concept art.
  • Environment Concept Creation: Produce high-fidelity concept art for gameplay spaces, environments, and world-building elements.
  • Gameplay Visualization: Create concepts that support gameplay systems, environmental storytelling, and narrative integration.
  • Cross-Team Collaboration: Work closely with Design, Narrative, Art, and Engineering teams to align visual direction with technical and gameplay requirements.
  • Pipeline Optimization: Ensure concept workflows support efficient iteration and seamless 3D implementation.
  • Mentorship: Guide and support mid-level and senior artists through constructive feedback and artistic coaching.
  • Creative Innovation: Explore new visual ideas and artistic approaches while maintaining consistency with project goals and constraints.

Qualifications

  • 7+ years of professional game development experience.
  • Experience shipping at least one full-cycle AAA title as a Concept Artist.
  • Strong expertise in environment concept art and architectural world-building.
  • Advanced proficiency with Photoshop, Illustrator, or similar 2D illustration tools.
  • Ability to quickly iterate on visual ideas and communicate gameplay possibilities effectively.
  • Strong understanding of composition, visual storytelling, city planning, and environmental design.
  • Experience with Maya, 3ds Max, or other 3D modeling tools is considered a plus.

Education

  • Degree in Fine Art, Illustration, Game Art, or a related discipline preferred.
  • Equivalent professional experience may be considered in place of formal education.
  • Additional expertise in 3D workflows or animation tools is beneficial.
