About the Role

ArenaNet is seeking a talented Environment Artist to contribute to an unannounced Unreal Engine 5 project. The studio, known for the acclaimed Guild Wars franchise, is looking for an artist who can create immersive and visually compelling worlds that support engaging gameplay experiences.

This role focuses on large-scale world building, environmental storytelling, and collaborative game development. The ideal candidate will work alongside cross-functional teams to shape memorable locations players will want to explore.

Job Overview

The Environment Artist will design and polish playable game environments while maintaining strong visual quality, readability, and performance standards. You will help create atmospheric spaces that balance artistic creativity with gameplay functionality.

This position involves close collaboration with Design, Lighting, Concept Art, Tech Art, and Art Direction teams to develop cohesive environments for a next-generation Unreal Engine 5 title.

Key Responsibilities

  • World Building: Create and refine large-scale game environments and playable maps using Unreal Engine 5.
  • Environmental Storytelling: Design immersive spaces with compelling compositions, set dressing, and atmosphere.
  • Cross-Team Collaboration: Partner with Design, Lighting, Concept Art, and Art Direction teams to ensure cohesive world development.
  • Asset Integration: Assemble terrain, foliage, props, materials, and lighting elements into polished in-game environments.
  • Optimization Support: Work with technical artists and engineers to improve workflows, streaming systems, and world-building pipelines.
  • Iteration & Feedback: Adjust environments based on playtesting results, creative direction, and production needs.

Qualifications

  • Strong experience creating high-quality game environments for modern titles.
  • Proficiency with Unreal Engine 5 and environment assembly workflows.
  • Understanding of composition, lighting, environmental storytelling, and player navigation.
  • Ability to balance artistic quality with gameplay and technical performance requirements.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills within multidisciplinary teams.

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Game Art, Digital Media, Animation, or a related field is preferred.
  • Equivalent professional experience in environment art or world building may be considered.
  • Portfolio demonstrating environment art and world-building expertise is highly valued.
