This role is ideal for developers passionate about gameplay programming, multiplayer systems, and solving technical challenges while working closely with designers, artists, and fellow engineers.

Job Overview

The Gameplay Engineer will develop and maintain gameplay systems, prototype features, and improve existing mechanics within ArenaNet’s proprietary game engine environment. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver polished and immersive gameplay experiences.

This position requires strong C++ programming skills, problem-solving ability, and enthusiasm for learning and contributing within a collaborative game development environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Gameplay Systems: Implement and maintain gameplay mechanics and interactive systems in collaboration with designers and engineers.
  • Feature Prototyping: Prototype and iterate on gameplay ideas to improve player experiences.
  • Debugging & Optimization: Identify issues, improve existing gameplay systems, and support performance optimization efforts.
  • Team Collaboration: Participate in code reviews, technical discussions, and collaborative problem-solving sessions.
  • Workflow Learning: Learn development practices, tools, and workflows from experienced team members.
  • Positive Contribution: Help foster an inclusive, supportive, and collaborative studio culture.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 2+ years of professional software engineering experience.
  • Strong programming skills in C++.
  • Understanding of gameplay programming and multiplayer game systems.
  • Experience working with large or long-running codebases.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills within development teams.

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related discipline is preferred.
  • Equivalent hands-on experience in game development may be considered.
  • Game jams, personal projects, or released mods/projects are valuable additions.
