Job Overview

The Senior Gameplay Engineer will design, prototype, and maintain gameplay systems from concept through production. You will contribute to technical direction, optimize gameplay code, and support the development of scalable multiplayer experiences within ArenaNet’s proprietary game engine.

This position requires advanced C++ programming expertise, strong communication skills, and the ability to collaborate across multiple disciplines while maintaining high-quality gameplay experiences.

Key Responsibilities

  • Gameplay Development: Build and maintain gameplay systems and features using C++ within a large-scale online game environment.
  • Feature Prototyping: Prototype and iterate on gameplay ideas based on playtesting feedback and collaborative discussions.
  • Technical Leadership: Help guide gameplay architecture, technical direction, and maintainable engineering practices.
  • Optimization & Debugging: Diagnose issues, improve gameplay performance, and optimize gameplay systems for stability and scalability.
  • Cross-Team Collaboration: Work closely with designers, artists, QA, and engineers to deliver polished player experiences.
  • Mentorship: Support and mentor other engineers through technical guidance, collaboration, and constructive feedback.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 5+ years of professional software engineering experience.
  • Strong proficiency in C++ programming.
  • Experience developing gameplay systems for multiplayer or online games.
  • Strong debugging, optimization, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to communicate technical concepts effectively with technical and non-technical teams.
  • Experience mentoring or supporting other developers is preferred.

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related discipline is preferred.
  • Equivalent industry experience and technical expertise may be considered.
  • Additional experience with multiplayer systems or large-scale game projects is highly valuable.
