Job Overview
As a Senior Technical Animator, you will contribute to the design and development of movement systems, rigging solutions, and animation technologies that power the Roblox platform. You will serve as a subject matter expert on animation pipelines and help define best practices for creators and internal teams.
This position requires strong technical animation knowledge, experience with real-time engines, and the ability to bridge artistic vision with engineering implementation.
Key Responsibilities
- Animation Systems Development: Partner with engineers to prototype and improve character movement, rigging systems, and animation technologies.
- Technical Expertise: Serve as an animation subject matter expert, helping shape scalable and user-focused animation workflows.
- Workflow Optimization: Evaluate existing production processes and recommend improvements based on industry best practices.
- Quality Assurance: Review outsourced animation assets and ensure they meet quality and technical standards.
- Creator Support: Collaborate with community and documentation teams to develop tutorials, examples, and educational resources.
- External Collaboration: Work with creators and partners to share best practices and identify opportunities for platform enhancements.
- Avatar Innovation: Contribute to the development of high-quality avatars, clothing systems, hair solutions, and character customization technologies.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Graphics, Animation, Computer Science, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in the gaming industry across multiple platforms.
- Strong expertise in Maya, Blender, real-time engines, and animation production workflows.
- Advanced understanding of rigging, skin weighting, morph targets, deformation systems, and cloth simulation.
- Experience with runtime animation systems and character controller technologies.
- Knowledge of scripting languages and node-based systems such as Unreal Blueprints is highly desirable.
- Excellent collaboration, communication, and problem-solving skills.
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Animation, Computer Graphics, Game Development, Computer Science, or a related discipline preferred.
- Equivalent professional experience in technical animation may be considered.
- Additional training in character rigging, simulation systems, or real-time technologies is beneficial.
