About the Role
Scopely is seeking a Lead Technical Artist to join an ambitious, unannounced cross-platform Strategy/MMO project. This role offers the opportunity to shape technical art direction, improve production workflows, and contribute directly to one of the company’s next major game releases.
Job Overview
The Lead Technical Artist will combine hands-on technical development with team leadership, supporting artists, animators, engineers, and designers throughout the production cycle. You will develop tools, optimize pipelines, and ensure scalable workflows that empower teams across distributed development environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop Tools and Pipelines: Design, build, and maintain tools, automation systems, validation utilities, and production workflows for Unity and DCC applications.
- Lead Technical Direction: Establish technical standards, best practices, naming conventions, and scalable content pipelines across the project.
- Optimize Game Content: Drive optimization initiatives for shaders, materials, assets, animation systems, memory usage, and runtime performance.
- Support Cross-Functional Teams: Collaborate closely with Art, Animation, Engineering, QA, Production, and external partners to solve technical challenges.
- Mentor Team Members: Lead, mentor, and support Technical Artists, Technical Animators, and Riggers while providing feedback and career guidance.
- Coordinate External Partners: Work with outsourcing and co-development teams to ensure delivered content meets project quality and technical requirements.
Qualifications
- Extensive experience in Technical Art, Tools Development, Pipeline Development, or related disciplines.
- Strong hands-on experience developing tools, automation systems, and workflows for Unity.
- Proficiency with Maya, Blender, Houdini, or similar DCC applications.
- Experience with scripting or programming languages such as C# and Python.
- Proven leadership experience managing or mentoring Technical Artists, Technical Animators, or Riggers.
- Excellent communication skills and experience working with distributed development teams.
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Game Development, Animation, Technical Art, or a related field is preferred.
- Equivalent professional experience in technical art or game development will also be considered.
- Additional training in scripting, graphics programming, or pipeline engineering is advantageous.
