About the Role

ArenaNet is hiring a Materials Artist to support the development of an unannounced Unreal Engine 5 project. Known for the Guild Wars franchise, the studio is seeking an artist who can create visually rich materials and immersive environment assets that enhance storytelling and gameplay.

This role focuses on physically based rendering workflows, material creation, and collaboration across multidisciplinary art teams to help shape the visual identity of expansive game worlds.

Job Overview

The Materials Artist will create high-quality PBR materials, environment assets, and surface details for a wide range of in-game locations. You will work closely with Environment Art, Tech Art, Design, and Art Direction teams to ensure assets meet both artistic and technical standards.

This position requires strong craftsmanship, attention to detail, and experience working within Unreal Engine 5 pipelines while balancing visual quality, optimization, and gameplay needs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Material Creation: Develop high-quality PBR materials and surface treatments that align with the project’s visual direction.
  • Substance Workflows: Build and manage Substance Designer graphs for tileable textures, trims, and environmental surface details.
  • Environment Assets: Create 3D props and game-ready environment assets for use within Unreal Engine 5.
  • Cross-Team Collaboration: Work closely with Tech Art, Environment Art, Design, and Concept Art teams to support gameplay and artistic goals.
  • Pipeline Development: Contribute to workflow improvements, optimization processes, and material libraries.
  • Quality Assurance: Identify and resolve material-related issues while maintaining strong visual consistency across environments.

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of professional game development experience creating environment or prop art for shipped titles.
  • Strong portfolio showcasing material creation, surface detail work, and environmental storytelling.
  • Proficiency with Substance Designer, Maya, ZBrush, Blender, and Photoshop.
  • Experience with Unreal Engine workflows, ideally Unreal Engine 5.
  • Strong understanding of PBR pipelines, optimization techniques, and modern asset creation workflows.
  • Excellent collaboration and communication skills within artistic and technical teams.

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Game Art, Digital Media, 3D Animation, or a related discipline is preferred.
  • Equivalent professional experience in game art or material creation may be considered.
  • Portfolio demonstrating strong material and environment art skills is highly valued.
