Animation Full-Time On-Site

Design Engineer

Design Engineer at ComfyUI

Role Overview

ComfyUI is hiring a Design Engineer to operate at the intersection of design and frontend engineering. This full-time, on-site role in San Francisco focuses on crafting polished user experiences — owning animations, micro-interactions, typography, accessibility, and the final layer of UI quality that defines product excellence.

You will bridge design and engineering, improve workflows, evolve the design system, and help designers prototype efficiently using modern AI-assisted development approaches.

Key Responsibilities

  • Own and elevate the UI quality bar across the product.
  • Design and ship polished frontend experiences end-to-end.
  • Refine transitions, easing curves, loading states, skeleton states, error states, and responsive behavior.
  • Collaborate closely with designers — iterating in Figma and production code without traditional handoffs.
  • Build greenfield surfaces including new pages, tools, and experimental features.
  • Translate the Figma design system into a robust frontend component library.
  • Contribute to and evolve design tokens, components, patterns, and documentation.
  • Create systems for prototype-to-production handoff using AI-assisted workflows.
  • Enable designers to become effective “vibe coders” by improving tooling and processes.
  • Independently identify and ship quality-of-life improvements.

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Strong experience in frontend engineering or product design with production-level code skills.
  • Expertise in modern frontend technologies such as TypeScript and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Proficiency in Figma and deep understanding of layout, typography, spacing, and color systems.
  • Strong attention to detail and refined product taste.
  • Ability to work autonomously and proactively improve UI without waiting for direction.
  • Interest in AI-assisted development workflows, LLMs, or agent-driven tooling.

Nice to Have

  • Experience building or scaling a design system.
  • Background in motion design or creative coding (Canvas, WebGL, shaders).
  • A portfolio, blog, or open-source contributions demonstrating design and engineering craft.

Why Join ComfyUI?

  • Work on a category-defining visual AI platform used by millions.
  • Collaborate with a high-caliber, flat, execution-focused team.
  • Contribute to the evolution of open-source AI tooling.
  • Be part of a mission-driven culture focused on meaningful, long-term impact.
  • On-site collaboration in San Francisco with a small, ambitious team.
