Scattermesh is seeking an experienced Character Artist to join its team in Herndon, Virginia. This full-time, on-site opportunity is ideal for senior artists passionate about creating photorealistic digital humans and driving artistic excellence across client projects.
Job Overview
The Character Artist will be responsible for designing and producing highly realistic human characters while collaborating with artists, leads, and supervisors to support production goals. This role requires deep expertise in anatomy, sculpting, texturing, grooming, and photorealistic character workflows.
Key Responsibilities
- Create Photorealistic Characters: Develop believable and highly detailed digital humans from concept art or scan data using advanced modeling, sculpting, and texturing techniques.
- Mentor Team Members: Share knowledge, provide constructive feedback, and help fellow artists improve their skills and workflows.
- Lead Problem Solving: Conceptualize and execute ideas while guiding technical and artistic solutions throughout production.
- Collaborate Across Departments: Work closely with artists, leads, and supervisors to address daily production requirements and improve pipeline solutions.
- Maintain Artistic Excellence: Ensure all character assets meet high standards for realism, likeness, shading, and overall visual quality.
Qualifications
- 10+ years of professional experience as a 3D artist or an outstanding portfolio demonstrating equivalent expertise.
- Mastery of artistic fundamentals including anatomy, composition, proportion, color, lighting, and surface properties.
- Extensive experience in realistic character sculpting, texturing, hair grooming, shading, rendering, and likeness creation.
- Deep understanding of FACS, facial blendshapes, facial performance systems, and wrinkle-map workflows.
- Advanced proficiency with Maya, ZBrush, Adobe Substance Painter, and related industry-standard tools.
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Animation, Fine Arts, Computer Graphics, or a related field is preferred.
- Equivalent professional experience in character art, VFX, or digital content production will also be considered.
- Advanced training in anatomy, sculpting, or character design is highly desirable.
