About the Role

Scattermesh is looking for a talented Lighting Artist to join its growing team in Herndon, Virginia. This full-time, on-site opportunity focuses on creating photorealistic lighting and rendering solutions for high-quality character and visual content across client projects.

Job Overview

The Lighting Artist will be responsible for developing realistic lighting setups, refining shaders, and ensuring consistent visual quality across multiple sequences. Working closely with artists and studio managers, the successful candidate will help deliver visually compelling and technically optimized renders.

Key Responsibilities

  • Enhance Character Renders: Optimize textures, shaders, and lighting setups to produce realistic and visually striking 3D character renders.
  • Establish Visual Quality: Create and maintain the overall look, color balance, and consistency across multiple shots and sequences.
  • Develop Lighting Solutions: Build physically accurate lighting environments based on photographic references and real-world lighting behavior.
  • Collaborate with Teams: Work closely with fellow artists and studio leadership to meet project requirements and production schedules.
  • Support Pipeline Improvements: Contribute to solving artistic and technical challenges while helping improve workflows and processes.

Qualifications

  • 1–9+ years of professional experience as a 3D artist or a strong portfolio demonstrating equivalent skills.
  • Strong artistic understanding of composition, perspective, color, lighting, and surface properties.
  • Experience with photorealistic lighting, look development, and rendering workflows.
  • Proficiency with industry-standard tools including Maya, Arnold, and Adobe Substance Painter.
  • Knowledge of HDR workflows, photography principles, color grading, and physically based rendering techniques.

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Animation, Computer Graphics, Fine Arts, or a related field is preferred.
  • Equivalent professional experience in lighting, rendering, or digital content creation will also be considered.
  • Additional training in photography, visual arts, or rendering technologies is advantageous.
