About the Role
Scattermesh is seeking an experienced Technical Artist to join its growing team in Herndon, Virginia. This full-time, on-site position focuses on developing photorealistic digital humans while advancing facial performance technologies and character production pipelines.
Job Overview
The Technical Artist will combine artistic expertise with technical problem-solving to create believable digital characters and enhance production workflows. This role requires extensive experience in facial anatomy, rigging, scripting, and digital human technologies to support high-end client projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Create Digital Humans: Develop highly realistic human characters from concept art or scan data using advanced sculpting, texturing, and shading techniques.
- Mentor Team Members: Share expertise, provide critiques, and support the professional growth of fellow artists.
- Lead Technical Solutions: Drive technical and artistic problem-solving while delivering projects within established timelines.
- Enhance Pipelines: Design, develop, and improve character performance pipelines, tools, and workflows to increase efficiency and quality.
- Research Innovation: Evaluate emerging technologies and recommend practical solutions that strengthen production capabilities.
Qualifications
- 10+ years of professional experience working with characters and digital human technologies.
- Expert understanding of human facial anatomy, including skin, eyes, hair, and facial movement.
- Extensive experience in realistic sculpting, texturing, hair grooming, shading, and rendering workflows.
- Deep knowledge of FACS, facial blendshapes, facial performance systems, and wrinkle-map technologies.
- Advanced proficiency in Maya, Python scripting, and technical collaboration with rigging and pipeline teams; C++ experience is a plus.
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Graphics, Animation, Technical Art, Fine Arts, or a related discipline is preferred.
- Equivalent professional experience in technical character art or digital human production will also be considered.
- Additional training in rigging, programming, or character pipeline development is highly desirable.
