About the Role

Scattermesh is seeking a Senior Lighting Artist to join its innovative team in Herndon, Virginia. This full-time, on-site position focuses on producing photorealistic lighting and rendering solutions for high-end digital characters and visual content across diverse client projects.

Job Overview

The Senior Lighting Artist will be responsible for establishing the visual quality of character renders, developing realistic lighting environments, and mentoring team members. This role combines artistic excellence with technical expertise to deliver visually compelling and production-ready assets.

Key Responsibilities

  • Enhance Visual Quality: Optimize textures, shaders, and lighting environments to produce highly realistic character renders.
  • Establish Artistic Direction: Create and maintain the overall look, color consistency, and visual quality across multiple sequences and projects.
  • Collaborate Across Teams: Partner with artists, leads, and supervisors to address production requirements and improve workflows.
  • Mentor Team Members: Provide constructive feedback, share expertise, and help elevate the technical and artistic capabilities of the team.
  • Improve Pipelines: Contribute to workflow enhancements, automation initiatives, and rendering optimizations to increase efficiency.

Qualifications

  • 10+ years of professional experience as a 3D artist or an exceptional portfolio demonstrating equivalent expertise.
  • Mastery of artistic fundamentals including composition, color theory, lighting, perspective, and surface properties.
  • Advanced knowledge of real-world lighting, photography, exposure, HDR workflows, and color grading.
  • Extensive experience with Maya, Arnold, Adobe Substance Painter, and photorealistic look development workflows.
  • Deep understanding of PBR rendering, render farm optimization, and lighting organic character elements such as skin, hair, eyes, and teeth.

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Animation, Computer Graphics, Fine Arts, Visual Effects, or a related discipline is preferred.
  • Equivalent professional experience in lighting, rendering, or digital content production will also be considered.
  • Additional training in photography, visual arts, or rendering technologies is advantageous.
