About the Role

Scattermesh is seeking a talented Character Artist to join its growing team in Herndon, Virginia. This full-time, on-site role focuses on creating photorealistic human characters for client projects while contributing to innovative content production pipelines.

Job Overview

The Character Artist will design and develop highly realistic digital humans using advanced sculpting, texturing, and grooming techniques. Working closely with fellow artists and production teams, the successful candidate will help deliver high-quality character assets while meeting production schedules and artistic goals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Create Realistic Characters: Develop believable and detailed 3D human characters from concept art or scan data using advanced modeling, sculpting, and texturing techniques.
  • Deliver Production Assets: Conceptualize, present, and execute character ideas while maintaining quality standards and project timelines.
  • Collaborate Across Teams: Work closely with artists, studio managers, and technical teams to achieve production objectives.
  • Problem Solve: Participate actively in artistic and technical discussions to overcome production challenges.
  • Maintain Quality: Ensure character assets meet photorealistic standards for anatomy, textures, shading, and grooming.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 years of professional experience as a 3D artist or an equivalent portfolio demonstrating expertise.
  • Strong understanding of anatomy, composition, proportion, lighting, color, and surface properties.
  • Expertise in realistic character sculpting, texturing, hair grooming, shading, and rendering workflows.
  • Proficiency with industry-standard tools such as Maya, ZBrush, and Adobe Substance Painter.
  • Knowledge of FACS, facial blendshapes, wrinkle systems, and Metahuman workflows is considered an advantage.

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Animation, Fine Arts, Computer Graphics, or a related discipline is preferred.
  • Equivalent professional experience in character art or digital content creation may be considered.
  • Additional training in anatomy, sculpting, or character design is beneficial.
