About the Role

Mob Entertainment, the indie studio behind the globally successful horror franchise Poppy Playtime, is seeking a Contract Lighting Artist to join its remote team. This role focuses on crafting atmospheric lighting that enhances tension, storytelling, and immersion across game environments.

Job Overview

The Lighting Artist will collaborate closely with environment artists, VFX specialists, and art directors to create visually striking and performance-optimized lighting solutions in Unreal Engine 5. The position requires a strong understanding of cinematic lighting, real-time rendering, and horror-themed visual storytelling.

Key Responsibilities

  • Environment Lighting: Design and implement optimized lighting setups across game environments using Unreal Engine 5 and GPU Lightmass workflows.
  • Cross-Team Collaboration: Work closely with environment, VFX, and art teams to ensure lighting aligns with the project’s visual direction.
  • Pipeline Development: Establish lighting standards, style guides, and best practices for the team.
  • Performance Optimization: Optimize lighting for PC and console platforms while maintaining high visual fidelity.
  • Mentorship: Support and mentor junior and mid-level lighting artists through feedback and artistic guidance.
  • Post-Processing: Contribute to bloom, lens flare, color grading, and other post-process effects within Unreal Engine 5.
  • Creative Innovation: Prototype new lighting looks, dynamic systems, and cinematic effects for key story moments.

Qualifications

  • 4+ years of experience in the games industry with at least one shipped title.
  • Strong expertise in Unreal Engine 5 lighting workflows and GPU Lightmass.
  • Excellent understanding of real-world lighting, photography, and cinematography principles.
  • Experience creating atmospheric, horror, or suspense-driven lighting styles.
  • Proven ability to optimize lighting for real-time performance on PC and console platforms.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills in a remote work environment.

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Game Art, Animation, Fine Arts, or a related field is preferred.
  • Equivalent professional experience in lighting for games may substitute for formal education.
  • Additional training in cinematography, environment art, or real-time rendering is beneficial.
